Quick Checklist: What You’ll Need

Before starting, ensure you have the following:

  • Original Indian Passport (valid for at least 6 months).
  • Current Australian Visa (e.g., VEVO check, PR, or Bridging Visa).
  • Proof of Address in Australia (Utility bill, bank statement, or driver’s license).
  • Passport-size Photos (Recent, 2”x 2” or 3.5cm x 4.5cm, white background).
  • ARN (Application Reference Number) generated from the Passport Seva website.

Step 1: Fill out the Government Online Form

The first step is to register on the Indian Government’s official portal.

  1. Visit the Passport Seva at Indian Embassies and Consulates portal.
  2. Select Australia and the specific jurisdiction (e.g., Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, or Brisbane) where you reside.
  3. Register a new account and log in.
  4. Select “Apply for Police Clearance Certificate” and complete the form.
    • Tip: Ensure your address in India matches your passport or you have proof for the current address.
  5. Submit the form and Print the final PDF application. Note down your ARN.

Step 2: Register with VFS Global

Once you have your ARN, you must handle the logistics through VFS Global.

  1. Go to the VFS Global Australia – Indian PCC website.
  2. Create a profile and select your preferred submission method:
    • In-Person (by Appointment): Best if you are near a major city.
    • By Postal/Courier: Most convenient for those in regional areas.
  3. Pay the Consular Fee and VFS Service Fee online. Download and print the payment receipt.

Step 3: Prepare the Application Package

Organize your documents in the following order:

  1. Printout of the Online Application Form (Signed).
  2. VFS Appointment Letter or Postal Label.
  3. Original Passport (Will be returned after verification, though some centers keep it during processing).
  4. Self-attested photocopies of:
    • Passport (First/Last pages and any observation pages).
    • Current Visa status (VEVO).
    • Australian address proof.
  5. Two Recent Photographs.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

In-Person: Attend your appointment at the VFS Center. You will undergo a quick document check and provide biometrics if required.

By Post: Send your package via Registered Post or Platinum Express to the address provided on your VFS shipping label. Ensure you include a pre-paid self-addressed return envelope (Platinum Express is recommended).

Step 5: Processing & Police Verification

The processing time depends on whether your data is already clear in the Indian system:

  • Pre-verified (Clear PVR): If your passport was recently issued and police verification is already on file, the PCC is usually issued within 5–10 working days.
  • New Verification Required: If the system triggers a fresh check, the request is sent to your local police station in India. This can take 3–6 weeks.
