If dreaming of trading an everyday routine for a year of working, traveling, and exploring Australia is on your mind, pay close attention if you hold a passport from China, India, or Vietnam.

The Australian Department of Home Affairs uses a pre-application ballot system to manage the high demand for the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa. Instead of the old “first-come, first-served” scramble that used to crash servers, applicants enter a randomized lottery for a fair, transparent chance to apply.

The dates for the upcoming 2026–2027 program year are locked in. Everything needed to register successfully without losing a spot is outlined below.

Key Dates for the 2026–2027 Ballot

The registration window is brief. Missing this three-week period means waiting until the next program year.

  • Open Date: Thursday, June 4, 2026
  • Close Date: Thursday, June 25, 2026
  • Note: All times are strictly in Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

Once registered, your entry stays in the selection pool. Random drawings happen periodically throughout the year until all registrations expire on April 30, 2027.

Step-by-Step: How to Register

The registration process takes place entirely online through the Australian immigration system.

1.Set Up Your Immi Account: Before June 4.

If you don’t have one, create an account on the official Australian Department of Home Affairs portal (ImmiAccount) and verify your email address.

2.Start a New Pre-Application:June 4 – June 25.

Log in, navigate to ‘New Application’, select ‘Visa pre-application registration’, and choose the ‘Registration – Work and Holiday Visa (462)’ form.

3.Input Personal & Identity Details:Double-check everything.

Fill out your name, birth date, passport number, and National ID details. Ensure everything perfectly matches your physical documents.

4.Submit and Pay the Fee:AUD $25.

Agree to the declarations and pay the non-refundable AUD $25 registration fee to finalize your entry into the ballot.

Golden Rules & The Identity Card Trap

The system is automated, meaning small clerical errors can derail your plans. Pay close attention to these rules:

  • Age Limits: You must be between 18 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the exact time of registration.
  • The National ID Trick: If selected, the ID details on your ballot must exactly match your visa application. You cannot change this later.
    • For India: You must use a valid PAN card. An Aadhaar card is not accepted.
    • For Vietnam: You must use a newer 12-digit national ID card. The old 9-digit cards are not accepted.
  • One Entry Only: You can only register once per program year. Duplicate entries won’t increase your chances; they will likely get flagged.

What Happens If You Get Selected?

If your name is drawn, you will receive an official Notification of Selection via email.

This isn’t an automatic visa approval; it’s a golden ticket that opens a 28-day window for you to submit your formal Subclass 462 visa application. You will still need to provide evidence of your education, meet health and character checks, and pay the standard visa application charge (currently around AUD $670).

You can be inside or outside Australia when you register for the ballot, but if selected, you must be outside Australia to lodge your first Work and Holiday visa application.

Good luck! Set a calendar reminder for June 4, get your documents ready, and may the odds be in your favor.
